Much of the Midwest woke up to a white New Year's weekend today. And not because of new snow. Jack Frost's cousin Hoar Frost came to visit overnight, riding on the blanket of dense fog.
If you didn't know, the term "hoarfrost" is derived from the Old English meaning of frost resembling an old man's beard. It was like the fog last night deposited ice crystals on objects exposed to the free air, such as tree branches, leaves, even fences.
It's always gorgeous to see. Even though we had a cloudy, gray day here, that didn't stop me from taking a few pictures – which can't compare to some of the breathtaking photos I saw today, mainly from sunny areas. Stunning.
Here's a few from the front and back decks...
Can't miss the purple tree!
I took a long walk around the lake, too. It was long in time since I had so many stops, trying to capture some of this unique frost.
