How Great Thou Halloween

Long before there was Beetlejuice, Michael Myers – and even me, there was Charlie Brown's Great Pumpkin.

Even though our team of writers at work span all ages, we all know the Peanuts Gang and the Great Pumpkin. So that was our mission today: Dress like characters in that seasonal special.

I dressed as The Great Pumpkin. If you see my name badge, it says: HELLO, my name is GREAT.

And here's our gang. Back row:
Woodstock, Peppermint Patty, Marcy, Snoopy's Dad, Lucy, and Charlie Brown. Front row: Linus, Snoopy, me, and Rerun.

Pretty much every team in our marketing department dressed up today so that was fun.

Our afternoon featured a different type of entertainment. As I mentioned earlier in the week, our team had two volunteer projects on our calendars this week. Today was going to the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King (outside nearby Waupaca) to help them with their Halloween party this afternoon. Mainly, BINGO.

Crazy amazing turnout of some 80 veterans. All eager to play the game and win their small stacks of quarters.

They also had a lot of pumpkins on display. We could vote on our favorite. Here's a few ideas for you next year! (Of course, I'm partial to the ice cream ones.)

Pretty cool, eh?

It was also cool that our friend Dar's dad is a resident at the veterans' home, so I got to meet up with him – and may or may not have given him extra candy from my Halloween Bingo Bucket!

What a fun few hours of volunteering!

Now, since Jim is out of town/state, it's just me and Mr. SKOL Man awaiting trick-or-treaters. Two so far – with lots of candy to go!

Hope your Halloween (or Great Pumpkin) was worth waiting for! 🎃

Lucky Number 7

When they say time flies when you're having fun, they're not wrong. I can't believe today already marks 7 years at my "new" job. I actually thought it was 7 last year, but I miscalculated. One, I'm a writer not a math person. Two, I blame COVID. They were basically lost years working from home. But they counted!

Things I enjoy about being a writer in a marketing department for a business insurance company...

1. I pretty consistently have a colorful morning commute. Yes, orange barrels ARE colorful! But the sunrises can be amazing, too.

2. I have the best team on the planet! Honestly, most people do stay in jobs because of the people. If you have great co-workers – for whatever reason – you don't want to even think about leaving. You don't want to miss out. (It does also help if you love what you do.) Lucky for me, I've got both job enjoyment and like-minded potty-mouthed (or at least, unfiltered) friends. Ha. Works for me!

3. Not all surprises are bad. Though my job is to quickly accept and adapt in many cases, there are also days I wouldn't have imagined 7 years ago. Today, for example, I spent the day with a bunch of reps from NBC / GOLF Channel to discuss the golf tournament my company sponsors on Maui each January. Just crazy. But in such a good way.

4. And of course, working from home on Mondays and Fridays never gets old! Dang. I just realized it's Wednesday so I'll have to set an early alarm in the morning. That's OK. I'm putting on a Halloween costume and heading to the office. It's what we do in the Fun Department!

Here's to another 7 years. Or less. I hope they go as fast as these last 7. Retirement is a lovely light at the end of that tunnel!

Many Thanks to Our Troops

I may have mentioned a time or two how amazing my employer is – and my team of fellow marketing writers. Our company does provide us paid "volunteer time off" and it just happens that our team is doing two volunteer events.

This week!

This afternoon, we gathered in a meeting room at the Point Brewery and created (and wrote) Christmas cards to the troops for the A Million Thanks program. A Million Thanks provides support and appreciation to our active and veteran military men and women through sending letters and granting betterment of life wishes, as well as providing higher education scholarships to their children.

Their current initiative is the holiday card and letter program. According to their website, all holiday letters for our troops need to be received by November 1 for Thanksgiving letters and December 1 for the winter holidays.

Our team of 10 writers concentrated on Christmas cards and hand-written messages. Give me a paper trimmer, tape runner, and holiday cardstock and I am in my own version of heaven!

I let others write the messages. I just made cards like I was a one-person assembly line! Turns out, every one on the team had a creative streak whether they thought so or not!

I was proud of mine. A few shown here. Sorry they're upside down on the writing end of the table!

In the end, we crafted and completed more than 75 cards that will be sent to troops far and wide to wish them a happy holiday season!

Interested?

Remember, you don't have to have a large group to do this. But if you want to try a worthy service project with a group, go for it. Here is the link to the A Million Thanks "send a letter" page with the details of what to say, what to do, and where to send.

As I express my gratitude of the nephews – and brother and uncles – who have served, it solidifies my appreciation of those who are willing to lay their lives on the line for this country. That's who we should be thinking about and thanking during this election season! (In my humble opinion.)

P.S. If you need a teacher or some advice on the card-making, I'm your gal! Message me! 🎄🎅💖♡💙

Mama Love

My book club has an amazing track record of picking out interesting books we often haven't heard of or think of reading. The 6 of us core members rotate choosing books each month so the group reads 2 of our choices per year. Mostly fiction, we occasionally have a good nonfiction title, too.

Such was the case for October and The Many Lives of Mama Love: A Memoir of Lying, Stealing, Writing, and Healing, where New York Times bestselling author Lara Love Hardin's memoir recounts her slide from soccer mom to opioid addict to jailhouse shot caller and her unlikely comeback as a highly successful ghostwriter.

If you haven't heard of it this year, here's the synopsis:

No one expects the police to knock on the door of the million-dollar two-story home of the perfect cul-de-sac housewife. But soccer mom Lara Love Hardin has been hiding a shady secret: she is funding her heroin addiction by stealing her neighbors’ credit cards.

Lara is convicted of 32 felonies and becomes inmate S32179. She finds that jail is a class system with a power structure that is somewhere between an adolescent sleepover party and Lord of the Flies. Furniture is made from tampon boxes, and Snickers bars are currency. But Lara quickly learns the rules and brings love and healing to her fellow inmates as she climbs the social ladder and acquires the nickname “Mama Love,” showing that jailhouse politics aren’t that different from the PTA meetings she used to attend.

When she’s released, she reinvents herself as a ghostwriter. Now, she’s legally co-opting other people’s identities and getting to meet Oprah, meditate with the Dalai Lama, and have dinner with Archbishop Desmond Tutu. But the shadow of her past follows her. Shame is a poison worse than heroin—there is no way to detox. Lara must learn how to forgive herself and others, navigate life as a felon on probation, and prove to herself that she is more good than bad, among other essential lessons.

The Many Lives of Mama Love is a heartbreaking and tender journey from shame to redemption, despite a system that makes it almost impossible for us to move beyond the worst thing we have ever done.

It was as good and interesting as it sounds. We all gave it a 5 out of 5 rating! I listened to the audiobook so I got to hear it in her own words and voice. That always adds impact for me.

It's actually a story many of us can identify with – sans the heroin and Oprah meet-up. I mean we've all done something in our lives we are ashamed of or, if not, someone has made us feel ashamed about. Or worthless.

In her 15-minute Ted Talk called Thieves of Hope, Lara talks about how good people who make a bad decision often carry that shame with them for the rest of their lives. Unless they find hope. Hope and shame cannot coexist. If you have shame, you can't have hope. And vice versa. That's why shame is the thief of hope.

If you can relate, you know it's not always easy to let go of the past and move on. No matter the scale of how "bad" or "stupid" you think you were. Most of our lives we aren't fighting the people who are shaming us, we're fighting ourselves and our inability to forgive ourselves for mistakes or poor judgment.

Throw in a fragile self-esteem and it's chaos.

As I shared with the club tonight (over an always delicious meal at El Mezcal), the way I personally combat it is practicing gratitude. If you thank God every night for your blessings that day, you'll start to see the big picture of your life in terms of what you have, not what you don't have – and certainly not what you've done.

Thanks for reading my Robyn Talk. Isn't it great to start the week in a positive frame of mind? We've got this!

God, Bless the Helpers

Yesterday was overwhelming. But in a good way. The benefit for my sister Rachel and her friend and passenger Brian was amazing – to put it mildly. You can't put a price tag on the amount of love and support that came pouring in – through raffle basket and monetary donations plus items for the silent and live auctions and money dropped in the buckets for each of them.

First, my heart was smiling that my dear friends helped me provide 15 raffle baskets – and then when all was said and done, there were more than 100! Crazy amazing! There were also more than a dozen each items for the silent and live auctions.

Of course, it was just just amazing that the Luck fire hall was full for most of the time. So many people came out to support them both. I saw a lot of cousins that I saw in recent weeks due to family funerals, but this was finally a positive reason to get together.

When Rachel gave her thank-you message she mentioned her daily devotion of 1 Corinthians 13:7, thanking the helpers – as in all the people who helped put the benefit together and all those who donated items ahead of time to make it work! (P.S. I thank you, too! You KNOW who you are! 💖 ) – And all her family, friends, and prayer warriors (I know YOU, too, thanks!).

Both Rachel and Brian were understandably emotional and overwhelmed! Shocked and amazed.

Naturally, the paramedics who saved their lives got a standing ovation too. So grateful for you!!!

They even gifted her a new jacket since they had to cut her nice one off of her while extricating her from her car. Who thinks of that? Apparently, Midwest Nice EMTs do! How awesome.

We got a picture of us 8 R's too. We know Dad and Mom were smiling down on us and so grateful all 8 of could be alive and together. We're grateful, too!!

So thankful for the Luck Fire and Rescue Dept for their manual labor during this event.

And for letting me be an honorary member. I do have an official T-shirt given to me after this. LOL!

A couple side notes:

I was lucky enough to win a few raffle baskets myself and for a friend who gave me basket money.

And I was more than blessed to see family, cousins and some LHS classmates, plus a long-lost fellow confirmation class friend from junior high (hi Tim!).

And... thanks to my generous friends Julie, Dar, Marigene, Gene, Cindy, Terri, Julie, Michelle, Sara, Jill, Christy, Jane, and Jackie!

On behalf of me and my sister, I love you all!

Back at the Homestead

What a whirlwind of a week! I thought I'd be sharing highlights each day of my time in San Diego. But to be honest, I was exhausted trying to live on West Coast time while my body was mentally and physically 2 hours away in Central Time.

First of all, about the amazing marketing conference. It was good and I learned some exciting things. I've been to the San Diego Convention Center before – remember when I was there for Comic Con and met Erik Estrada? – but I forgot how massive the place is. And very interestingly designed.

You know how I love me some architecture pictures. This was coming down the escalator at the right moment and seeing the other escalators off in the distance.

For the conference, the final keynote was an interesting coincidence.

On the plane ride out, I just happened to finally watch the Barbie movie (worth seeing!). And it turns out actress Issa Rae – "president of BarbieLand" – was our final speaker!

How interesting! Most times, we have no idea how hard people work – or what obstacles they must hurdle – to get where they are today. Probably like most of us. We're just not that famous!

In the evening hours, after grabbing a bite to eat, I could explore a little bit. But kept it close to my hotel since the sun sets there early, too, at this time of year.

Fun fact: The bar where the filmed the "Great Balls of Fire" piano scene in Top Gun was not even a half block from my hotel!

Piano is still there!

And plenty of memorabilia.

Also, service men and women have found it a place to hang their hats. Pretty cool.

Also, just a block or two in the other direction is the USS Midway Museum on the Navy Pier and some interesting statues.

The Unconditional Surrender statue – based on the iconic photograph – was pretty cool to see.

Especially when there was a couple replicating the pose while I was there! Gives you a sense of how tall the statue is, too!

In that same park, they also had a statue scene of Bob Hope entertaining the troops. If you're too young to know, you missed out!

Very well done!

Of course, I also had a chance to catch the sunset there before booking it back to my hotel before I got dark. Glad it was so close!

Yesterday was a super long travel day...

Leaving the marinas of the Pacific Coast...

To flying over snow-capped mountains...

To the beautiful fall colors of the Midwest!

Due to some delays and fun travel headaches, I didn't get back home 'til almost 11 p.m. last night. Glad to be home same and sound!

And in the Central Time Zone. If you know, you know!
