It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere

It's high tide – or high time – I share my inaugural Parrothead experience! Finally going through pictures and reliving the experience that is a Jimmy Buffett concert.

The morning of July 20 dawned hot and humid with 82 degrees at our house at 9 a.m. It's not wonder the big, bad storms blew through that day. In fact, we were watching dark clouds in our rearview mirror most of our way down to Alpine Valley. Later we learned off all the storm damage in the Rapids area and even our neighborhood, but were assured our house and trees were OK. So we stayed in Margaritaville.

We met up with our veteran crew – friends Kyler and Julie and their pretty much annual Parrothead gang – outside of Alpine Valley so we could caravan in together. There's a system to everything and they knew what they were doing!

As you can see, you gotta park certain ways so you can set up you canopies – quite useful in hot sun and, in our case later that afternoon, driving rain.

Here's our crew. Parking side by each we managed to have 6 cars (3 rows) so we (they) could set up the canopies, tables and grills. It's a system, like I said.

No lack of food or beverage, that's for sure. Though the sweet stuff got soaked later!

Here's Kyler and Jim, who worked together a dozen years at the publishing house in Iola.

And a rare photo while the sun was shining.

Because yes, this was the view before the clouds broke.

All these smart people with tents!

After the rain, we walked around to catch some of the Parrothead Party surrounding us. Fins to the left, fins to the right!

So many parrots.

Whatever they were doing with stuff inside ice, they told us they couldn't use a chainsaw this year. Uhm, probably good unless you can find a sober operator.

These people even brought in their own beach sand! It's serious business.

Me: Look at the lighthouse! Jim: No, you can't have one.

Kyler's wife Julie and I befriending a shark! We have a unique fin-ship. Ha.

How much stuff can they fit in their cargo shorts and can they find it?

Time for the concert. Follow the crowd of interesting outfits.

We had general admission seats on the lawn – on the hill. My first time ever to Alpine Valley. It's quite a hill. You can see behind us that we positioned ourselves sort of center stage. But far away.

A panoramic of the hill.

And here's our gang!

And goofy-ness.

And well-behaved. Momentarily.

Concert-time temperature. Wow.

See, we could catch glimpses of Jimmy on stage.

But for the most part, watched on the screens.

There was entertainment in the crowd, too. Lots of beach balls boppin' around and later, these light-up fins making their way through the crowd.

And the crowd... always standing. Always singing. Always having fun.

It was a great time. The only downers were getting stuck in the mud trying to get out of the parking lot. And they having that process of leaving take some 2 hours.

We were so exhausted by then that rather than get home at 4 a.m., we found a cheap hotel in Madison and crashed for a few hours. Woke up somewhat refreshed... craving Cheeseburgers in Paradise.

Hit Like a Girl

I'm not saying the scientific theory of osmosis is bunk, but it didn't work to transfer knowledge in high school or college. And it definitely didn't work to transfer skill this past week – despite countless hours of close observation.

In other words, I saw a lot of USGA US Girls' Junior competition last week and I couldn't play anything remotely resembling their game when we hit the SentryWorld course tonight.

All I could think was dang, I wish I could hit like a girl! Especially those girls!

Still, it was a treat to play on the course as it sits in its full glory – all flowers bloomed and fairways and greens groomed. It's usually like that, of course, but this time was different. Since all 4 of us had volunteered or spectated or both last week, we kept recalling how different players did on different holes and, basically, how incredibly awesome and talented they were!

I'll have to be content once again that I can't just pick up skills through osmosis – and I'll only shoot eagles or birdies with my camera.

Say "cheese"! Or "fore!"

Birthday Paddles

Birthday paddles? It's not what you think. No spanking allowed!

We took our friend Cindy out on the river for her birthday this evening. A great night for kayaking. Mild temperatures and the wind wasn't too bad.

We saw wildlife right away! Yay. Took me quite a few shots to get Mr. Eagle in focus since there was some consistent wave action.

These two were probably my best bets. He didn't move at all. Just me!

Smile, birthday girl!

The guys were on a mission to paddle through the waves, too!

Then it was calm. I always stalk my lily pad pond, as I call it, to see if there are flowers opening up. Not my night for that. Not sure if it's that way all along the Wisconsin River right now. Maybe they have a "season" too??

Came across some other feathered friends, too.

Love that these ducks have purple on them! Pretty!

We also came across this unusual sight. A blue heron on the tippy top of a tree. Usually we see them walking along the shoreline or on a branch. Never just parked on top. Maybe he was watching the sunset?

We also saw the river view of the recent storm damage. Look how huge both of these uprooted trees are!

Pretty crazy stuff! Still lots and lots of cleanup to be done in the area, that's for sure.

After we came ashore by the Biron boat landing, we took the birthday girl to King Cone. Well, I guess we ALL celebrated there! Birthday paddles plus perks. My kind of celebration.

Black Tie Optional, Fun Required

The thing about getting to downtown Chicago is that it's an orange-barreled, traffic-jammed, headache of a mess to get to. The thing about family, though... is they're worth it.

On Saturday, Jim's cousin Jeff and his wife Mel (above) were the proud parents of the groom as their son Jacob (also Jim's godson) was married. The wedding was held at the Kimpton Gray Hotel right smack dab in the middle of downtown Chi-Town. The wedding, reception, and dance all took place at the upscale hotel, which made it quite convenient.

And pretty amazing.

Madeline, the beautiful bride, is escorted by her father before the 6-minute ceremony. For real.

It was like no time and their friend the officiant was giving them the go ahead to kiss...

And then here we are – meeting the new Mr. and Mrs. Jake Austin!

Of course, their dog was in the wedding. What a silly question. And he was well-behaved.

As for cousins Jeff and Jim, I guess they were well-behaved, too. By Austin standards. Ha.

The handsome groom with his handsome godfather.

Sam, the beautiful sister of the groom who lives in Texas now, was there with her husband their little boy Joey.

He was the hit of the party. Such a cutie. And since it was black tie optional he work a pink one! And kept it on.

We did our part dressing formally, too. I felt like I was going to prom or something – with an actual date for once. Ready to twirl around in my long dress! And I did later at the dance, that's for sure. Jim bought the dress for me online and it worked out, I'd say. Purple always does though, doesn't it?

The dinner was great and the cake was fabulous. I'm a stern reviewer of cake so it has to pass the good frosting test. This was 5-star. No worries there.

The room where they had the dance was on the hotel's top floor. It didn't feel like a rooftop until...

They opened it up for the dance and we were groovin' and raisin' the roof in downtown Chicago. It was the coolest thing. And the weather was perfect for that! Plus, the fresh air even prompted my date to dance with me a few times. Now that's a whole new level of fun.

So glad we could make it and represent all the family unable to travel down there. I hope the pictures help you feel like you were there because we know you were – in spirit.
