Yup, tonight was the official start of the stock car racing season around here! The good news is Mother Nature mostly cooperated. The great news is our nephew Colin had a top 5 finish.
Right after we got home from work my brother Ron arrived from Minnesota. It was a cloudy afternoon (and very windy) but the radar didn't show any rain in the near vicinity, so we headed to the race track... armed with plenty of layers.
Colin qualified 2nd in time trials. And by the time the heat races started, Carter was already complaining heavily about the wind getting something in his contacts. He didn't have contacts yet last race season. So after trying his re-wetting drops without success, he ended up sitting in the vehicle for the rest of the night.
Which wasn't as long as you'd think.
We had a rain delay that pretty much replaced intermission and two smaller feature races, so they jumped right into the main features to avoid any further delays.
Colin started in 9th place and through a lot of hard work and careful driving (plenty of caution flags tonight), he moved up to 4th place at one point. In the last 9 laps, though, he was passed and could not get past the 4th-place car. So he placed 5th in a close pack of cars crossing the finish line. Exciting race!
Both Ron (with his fancy camera) and I were trying to take pictures but it was dark early so who knows if anything turned out. We'll check in the morning. Right now we need sleep before our own big race tomorrow.
Hopefully, we'll be all set to go green, too!!
