Voice of God: Take a Day Off Already!

I may have been the voice of God streaming down with lights from the clouds – or just my maximized stress levels – but my mind got the message to take the day off today. Shout out to Mental Health Awareness Month!

Slept in to make up for many sleep-deprived nights this week. That was a good start. Had to be sure I was up and showered in time to go to my one-hour deep tissue massage. Priorities!

Then it was a crap-ton of errands and special shopping...

As in let me check out some area greenhouses for hanging flower baskets! I visited Ella's on the recommendation of a friend.

I guess these "cone" type holders are a trend this year but my hanging baskets aren't very elevated so that didn't speak to me. I had to bypass those.

What did speak to me was that ONE hanging basket could take up the back of my vehicle for the very reasonable price of $36.

Fits perfectly in the front deck galvanized tin. Now I'll have to figure out the rest of my color scheme for the front facing part of the deck another day! Isn't that crazy amazing? I realize quite a few people I know were hopping around at Amish greenhouses today, too. So I'll have to check things out Sunday or Monday.

Another buy... and keep this under your hats so we don't offend Mr. Deck Chair...

I'm NOT exactly replacing Mr. Deck Chair. He just has new friends... who happen to have places built in for phones and water bottles.

Also, I thought these would match well with our new siding from last summer. Close but not quite the same. However, I'm glad I snapped the photo because holy crap, our deck needs attention this $ummer! Gah.

I did get some steps in after "work hours" but then remembered one of our favorite book club books was being featured on Netflix only starting today – in a remarkable movie starring Sally Field. So good!! Don't be intimidated that this is about an octopus that talks to a human. That's not what's happening. He may have thoughts, but humans can't hear those.

In the end, he just realizes (just like in the book), "Humans. For the most part, you are dull and blundering. But occasionally, you can be remarkably bright creatures."

Great Kleenix-filled way to wrap up that Godsend of a day off!

We Can All Be Rock Stars

Happy Thursday. The first thing I want to say – especially with any of you with some self-doubt at work – there is always someone on your team who thinks you're a rock star.

It's true!

The other morning when I was in desperate need for caffeine and they had no sugar-free Red Bull left in stock in our work cafeteria, I was sorta forced to try a sugar-free Rock Star for the first time. Not the same. But...

By sheer coincidence, someone on our team had left me a random "you're a rock star" type gift and I had a little uplifting trophy to accompany my energy drink. In a very unplanned way, it made for the best day!

I'm trying to keep that attitude positive this week as I deal with really inconsequential things like how will our church choir sing the Hallelujah Chorus during Memorial Day weekend? How can I take a mental health day on Friday when there is so much urgent work to do? How can I celebrate other people?

I think I found a way. For me this evening (after a ladies' golf league meeting), it was capturing photos of K.C. pitching successfully while at another ballpark his sister A.C. was pitching to their 10-run victory in softball. I adore their parents so this was cool for me.

I want both the baseball and softball teams to embrace that rock star status today.

But I also hope that any of you who feel "undervalued" at work – to use my words a few weeks ago – to feel like you matter. But mostly, to feel like you're a rock star.

Pretty sure most of us are!

Team Steps Challenge

We're having a companywide steps challenge at work in May. It started Tuesday but I didn't realize until today that my FitBit is no synched up with the new version of the work app. Darn technology.

Hopefully I got everything reset and reconnected so I didn't lose all of yesterday's steps and today's. Our Writers Assembling team needs me!

This after for what was intended as fun, a small group of us from Marketing took a short walk across the street in Schmeeckle Reserve – this amazing 280-acre conservancy area technically on the campus of UW-Stevens Point.

I say "intended" fun because is turned out to be sunny.... but in the 40s and windy. B-r-r-r-r! (Side note: Hubby wore long underwear to golf league tonight!)

The fun part was coming across a small herd of what I could only call "domesticated city deer."

I mean this dude (I shouldn't assume a dude just because he was very busy chewing on his snack with his mouth open, sorry) just looked at me and I was 5 feet away. No flinching or need to run away from a crazy camera lady!

And yes, my Up North brothers-in-law and nephews would be ashamed of me not knowing the difference between male and female deer. But this one looked like Rudolph's girlfriend Clarice. I obviously follow a different outdoors learning guide.

Anyway, it made for a fun little jaunt to get steps!

And now I better log off because I still need 145 steps to get to 10,000 today. Can't let the team down!

P.S. You know me. I am NOT at all competitive!

Happy Five-o of May-o

When I see this, I'm hoping there's a spicy queso dip ahead or maybe buffalo chicken! What's your favorite dip?

Of course I am that dorky photographer who takes a picture and knows I'll share it 2 months later on Cinco de Mayo.

We had a Salsa-Guac Showdown at work again this year. I only participated as a taster/voter. Did not make any this year. I would have had a pretty late start after taking track photos! But there some good entries! I have yet to warm up to the taste of guacamole, but I'll take salsa with heat any time.

After work, I met up with friends Cindy and Marigene at the movie theater to see The Devil Wears Prada 2. Loved it! Funny moments, of course, but some heartwarming ones as well. No spoilers! If you liked the first one 20 years ago, go see it!

Now I've got to get reading. I picked a book for my June book for Book Club called The Correspondent. It already reminds me of my mom – the most prolific letter and card writer of all time! Should be good.

Enjoy the non-holiday!

Temporarily in Bloom

I was so excited to take a bunch of these pictures yesterday and even today (at lunchtime), but boy did I need a jacket to ward off the wind by the time I got to track meet at 5 p.m. I just don't know what has Mother Nature in such a foul mood!

Anyway... enjoy some blossoms from yestersday when I thought the REAL spring was here. Probably a good thing hubby reminded me of the many nights in the 30s this week so I didn't go hogwild at the flower place!

Full disclosure. I have no idea what any of those flowers are. But I like them!

What I do know is that while I was taking pictures at a track meet tonight my friend's little daughter latched onto me and picked me a handful of flowers! As someone who hopes to be a grandmother some day, I thought is was the greatest gesture leading into Mother's Day.

P.S. That's my not so subtle warning that Mother's Day is this Sunday. 💜

A BINGO Cage Match?

Sunday suddenly BINGO got more serious. After singing at church and going home to pick up my official old lady BINGO bag I ordered on Amaazon, I headed to the school.

Naturally I was pumped up after taking some $1,000 in the past 6 weeks. But boy. BINGO bitties (or is it biddies?) don't like that. Buying my cards they said, "Yep, you're not allowed to win today." That was just the buying the cards process.

Then, at intermission, a handful of ladies I do not know at all said, "You better not win the 50/50 today." My first thought was "sore loser" and second thought was "should I alert ESPN there is actually BINGO cage match potential?! And... how do I make money off of that?

I fell short in the goal post pattern BINGO by one and the coverall Progressive Jackpot by two (pictured above). Come back September 20 to join me!

For my safety (LOL) I guess I'm glad I was a loser!

P.S. I really was going to focus on some pretty spring blossom pictures today but they wouldn't survive in any cage match!

Sneaky Sticker Shock

After an oil change this morning, I had to stop and gas up and... I must not have paying attention lately because gas prices have jumped sky high.

Also why I was putting gas in my mileage-friendly Honda vs hubby's truck for an evening trip to Green Bay for a friend's retirement.

I looked it up – on my trusty, historical-record-type blog, of course – and the last time gas prices were of concern or of note was in June of 2022 when we hit $4.87 per gallon of the regular unleaded variety. God bless you diesel people. Ouch.

We did have fun at our friend Scott's retirement party. We both worked with him at Rapids newspaper and then again at the publishing house in Iola. He and his wife Sandy are the ones from Green Bay that we meet up with each summer for at least one golf round on a nice course somewhere!

On the way home, we had to keep a sharp eye out for deer and orange construction barrels. It's that time of year.

You'd think this would be a nice sunset reflection on a lake. But nope its a flooded farm field near Shiocton. Nearly half of the 400 homes in the village were evacuated two weeks ago as the Wolf River reached record levels with that constant rain. The road was dry today. But there is going to be quite the agricultural impact on that area of Wisconsin, I'm sure.

Got home in time for me to get 8 hours of sleep before I sing in church in the morning. Then BINGO. I gotta play for gas money now!!

My "Mother's Day"

Today is my Mother's Day. Which I can officially acknowledge at 10:15 p.m. to mark 28 years since I brought our brown-eyed bandit into the world. Yes, 28 years! Next year will be terribly awkward since we'll both be 29 and I already have twin. Hmmm.

When my oldest sister (whom my "real twin" and I call our "upstairs mother") sent me the above image today, I had to cry.

It's one thing to love your child and celebrate his existence. But it's a whole new level of pride when you can look at your adult child and realize you did good raising him. I mean we have to take SOME credit, right?

Despite his serious "Thinker" pose above prepping to be the narrator in a grade school play, he has the best sense of humor. A perfect combo of (yes both of us, LOL) his parents' quick wit, clever turns of phrase, and of course, sarcasm.

I love his courage to get a passport and study abroad. Not knowing anyone! But finding a career focus after graduation to work for a company that provides this same opportunity for others like him.

I beam with pride when I hear how much he does for others. His girlfriend's family cannot say enough good things about what he does for them – from physical labor to helping care for people and animals. I'm most proud of you for that, Carter. You have such a big, generous heart.

You have such compassion. Even at 8 years old you'd be corralling wayward shopping carts in the Walmart parking lot with a "Mom, why can't people just put them where they belong? It takes like 5 seconds!" 😁

And I'll cry typing this... throughout your childhood (even in the sometimes surly teen years), every time I called my mom, you were willing to talk first with a "Hi, Grandma. How's it going?" She just thought you were so kind, smart, funny, and exceptional.

I'm biased. But I agree.

Thanks for making my "Mother's Day" my best day! 💜

That Damn C Word

So... fricking cancer claimed the life of one of our favorite coworkers when we were at the newspaper. Granted, we exited in 2003 but we – at a minimum – have exchanged Christmas cards ever since.

I think what both Jim and I remember is that Diane always had a smile on her face. Even when we had last-minute changes of where ads had to be placed, etc. for the day's newspaper edition.

In a weird coincidence of the way-back time machine, I was in Lamaze class with Diane's son and daughter-in-law, who delivered their boy about a week or so before Carter. Diane watched them both on a few occasions over their toddler years and that's why we occasionally her called her "Grandma Diane."

Ugh.

I sometimes think during funeral times that it stinks how many people we know. But then have to pause and remember... they were pretty amazing people, how lucky were we that we got to spend part of our lives with them?

Just something to ponder.

Dirt and Grit

If you pay attention, you can really learn some life lessons watching a baseball or softball game. Mainly, the players who succeed are the ones with grit who don't give up.

Last night I split time between both of those games and was editing photos way past my bedtime! Behind the lens of my camera I see and capture both jubilation and disappointment. Great plays and missed opportunities.

Last night I really wanted to tell the umpire he was wrong to call this guy from the other team safe. But nope. My frames captured it and our second baseman missed the tag. By mere inches.

But that didn't make him throw his glove down and quit. He just tried harder the next opportunity.

And would you look at that? He clearly made the out the next time. And the opponent missed reaching the base safely... by mere inches.

My hubby coached baseball forever. Not as long ago as when Babe Ruth was around with his inspiring quotes, but many decades. I loved watching him and listening to him encourage the kids (of all ages) to keep trying. And when they made a mental mistake (usually running bases or fielding), he'd ask, "OK, so what did you learn from that?" They'd answer and he'd say something like, "Right? So next time don't do that."

If we all could have a supportive Coach Austin in our ear, maybe we'd spend more time focusing on what we can learn from our mistakes and bad choices instead of beating ourselves up.

Remember: You can't beat the person who doesn't give up!

Believe in yourself!

Let me introduce you to Theo

I think I told you a short while ago that I was reading a book that was both interesting and inspiring... and possibly life changing.

That book is "Theo of Golden" by Allen Levi.

And was our Book Club discussion tonight.

I'm not going to spoil any story lines but give you a few things to ponder.

The "public line about this book" is this: One spring morning, a stranger named Theo arrives in the small Southern city of Golden. He doesn't explain much about where he came from or why he's there—but when he visits the local coffeehouse, where pencil portraits of the people of Golden hang on the walls, he begins purchasing them, one at a time, and giving each portrait to the person depicted. In exchange, he asks only for the person's story. And so portrait by portrait, person by person, secrets are revealed, regrets are shared, and ordinary lives are profoundly altered.

But it's so much more than that. Do you realize how hard it is for some people to accept a gift with no expectation in return?

Also, how would you, me, or any of us accept a portrait of ourselves when the artist sees us as some sort of shining light when we see ourselves as living in shadows or darkness?

"Theo of Golden" is quite honestly an unforgettable novel about the power of generosity, the importance of connection, and the quiet miracles that happen when we choose kindness and wonder.

And, quite honestly, prompted me to perform more "random acts of kindness."

What this character did was reinforce that  no matter our social status, we can still listen and help others in need. No matter our current social status, we do have the capacity to help.

Sunday's Games of Chance

So first of all, I got to church and realized our youth group was going to host BINGO. The only price of admission was a big ol' candy bar. Thank goodness one of my lady friends had two so I could stay...

And get BINGO twice for some candy bars. It's a great idea!

Of course down the street from church I saw the blossoms – cherry, Hopa, whatever – were begging to get invited to the spring blooming party. I hope Mother Nature invites them soon!

Then, after getting an external car wash I figured I should work on my interior at home. If the fact that I finally removed my snow brush impacts you – or our next month – I apologize!! "Please end, winter!"

I removed it and lots of other stuff from the back end. And realized I have long ways to go with spring cleaning.

And per usual, I'll count on you to tell me what to do next! <3

Shop Local Saturday

There wasn't any random holiday today like "Shop local!" but that was how the day went. And frankly, I loved the opportunity to support these entrepreneurs.

First, after assessing my gift certificates for Rustic Redefined, (on 8th St. in Wis. Rapids!) I needed to start my day with clothes shopping. Every woman's dream, right?

Side note: I'm not really a fan of shopping ... but with $250+ in gift cards from hubby and friends, I walked into the place like Vivian from Pretty Woman with "I have money to spend!" How fun is it to not even look at the price tag? A very foreign concept for us middle class folks.

But so enjoyable! Also.. GO THERE! They have such stylish and unique stuff.

I came away with a dress, two tops, a matching necklace, and cool summer handbag. And... still one more $100 gift card to spend.

Unrelated: My fashion show at home made me realize my advanced lady choices are "aged" because hubby showed no enthusiasm.

Who cares? I like what I got!!

After I got home, my friend and neighbor Cindy across the street and I headed down to Adams for Independent Book Store day.

If you are a bookworm of any type, visit Books on Main!

I was excited to get the last copy (in the store) of my book choice for Book Club in June. And  2 "unplanned" bonus books. Whoops. Can you stop us or only hope to contain us??

The one take away today between some very different types of retail / transactional experiences is that we should all think shop local first. And recognize not only the value of your transaction but your ability to support a personal passion for succcess!

TGIF: Trifle Gathering In Friend's (house)

Considering what a hot mess things are at in my life (mainly work life) right now, it was a very welcome distraction to get a call on my Trifle Hotline this morning.

OK. It's not a real thing. But now I'm wondering if it should be. Ha.

A friend was inquiring if I had a recipe for trifle that includes XYZ, her father-in-law's favorite candy bar. I told her I always make these things up on the fly, but recommended how she could make it work into the (what I consider required) trifle layers.

Side note: I can't go into specifics because I do not want to spoil the surprise... the image above is not what we worked on – it's just to get you trifle fans a reason to read this!

I also asked if she even had a trifle bowl. And when she said no she was just going to buy one, I had wicked flashbacks to Christmastime and my focus to find just one bowl! Now that I have 3 of them and one was fresh out of the dishwasher, I said, "Let me loan you a trifle bowl, stop by your house over lunch and give you a Trifle 101 tutorial."

So that's what I did.

I gave her the Trifle 101 basics. Cake-like layer on bottom, then pudding layer, then crunchy layer, repeat all 3, and add a whipped cream topping and "fancy/decorative" cover.

I saw the final result later today and think some birthday boy is going to be pretty happy tomorrow.

Of course this also got me thinking, since no less than a dozen people have urged me to hold a workshop/tutorial of some sort, should I do that? Would you come? Would I need to just pick the flavors, charge for the ingredients and the bowl so you can take that home and understand the basics of building a trifle... and the etiquette of serving/eating it? There really is a lot involved.

Or should I just do a video (very amateur quality) demonstrating it?

For those who have asked me or wondered, I welcome the feedback. I can either do a Trifle on Demand type Hotline to make them, or I could empower you to do them and keep your family and co-workers happy for life. Ha.

I appreciate feedback since trifles can appear intimidating.

At the same time, I'm a nice and honest lady. They are NOT that hard to do. Y'all can handle this.

The Staying Power of Sisterhood

As a very amateur photographer, I sometimes wonder what draws me to the amazing young women participating in high school sports.

I am really starting to get it now.

  1. I have 6 sisters so I'm keenly aware of the power of supportive sisterhood.
  2. My high school was too small to offer all of the girls' sports opportunities.
  3. I'm a boy mom and there was never an opportunity/option to raise a girl in this atmosphere.
  4. As I age, I realize that once we "outgrow" the instinctively "catty years," many of us sisters end up supporting each other.

Why does this matter today? Well, first, I took the picture at a softball game tonight that was not going our way and I love how our catcher went out to calm down our pitcher and assure her she has this and she's doing great.

And .... This was following a crap day at work and (sorry Mom in heaven) a recent shit-show of several weeks at work.

The negative things I have discovered (and bear with this 50+ lady) is that after surviving the first decade of my career as a newspaper reporter and talked down to by city and county officials as "sweetheart" as if "bless you for trying." Then into the bigger publishing world where a female publisher had to act extra tough and aggressive to match her male counterparts – and us worker bees suffering as a result. And now (as a female obviously and at that special age) feeling undervalued and fighting for what I desire and, more importantly deserve, it's been a ... crap spring.

While hubby and I should be looking forward to retirement on the horizon... his way closer than mine... I am in a negative mindset. So negative with recent things at work. (Though I still absolutely love the company and its benefits.)

But the positive, as always since forever, is that there is this random network of sisters at work who get it and are willing to give me a hug and try to convince me to not feel "undervalued," but recognize how valued I am!

I'm sharing because I want high school girls to latch onto this. Don't be a "Mean Girl." Extend the support to your "sisters" (on a sports team or wherever) and they'll extend it back.

College girls, same thing but also stand firm that you've learned things and deserve a job.

Early career girls... prove your worth through your work quality first before getting cocky.

And the rest of us... if you are a great sister (aka supporter), I think you'll find women who return the favor.

Not to say men can't do this ... because a male co-worker took me lunch today to talk me off the ledge... but just lean into the opportunity to support (and hopefully enjoy) the potential staying power of sisterhood.

End note: I'll be OK. I just have things to think about. And I did get a few of the best hugs this week!

BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!!

Embracing Mother Earth

Well Mother, Mother Earth is having her annual spotlight in the sun! Happy Earth Day!

Some years my friend and I pick up trash from the ditches, some years I completely let it pass by without thought, and this year there was too much going on for me to give the day the full honor and observance it deserves.

But...

I did connect with some "solar power" on the swing while working quite awhile after hours ... on my swing. That counts, right?

Then I bonded with the Earth when I trimmed down our Pampas Ass Grass. Which according to multiple sources (since I have 2 black thumbs) you should do in late April or early May when you KNOW there won't be another frost.

Well, when I got home from work and saw hubby brought up the fan to the bedroom window to replace the wintertime vaporizer/humidifier, I figured he must know something. Like maybe Mother Earth told her mentally disturbed sister Mother Nature to chill out and move onto spring already.

I hope that's the case!

But since my hubby stores the wheelbarrow in his One-Key-for-Jimmy-Only Shed, he'll have to do part 2 tomorrow as it will be dark when he gets home from golf tonight!

What habits have you picked up to help preserve the planet?

I admit Jim and I are so accustomed to recycling EVERYTHING, that I feel guilty when I'm in a situation where the vibe is "Just throw everything in the trash."

But I did attempt to give up Aqua Net hairspray to save the Ozone in the '90s. I admit the liquid-type stuff didn't work the same. So I relapsed to aerosol spray and I hope some Earth-loving big hair fan picked up where I left off.

And don't get me started on how we deal with keeping volume in our thinning hair after we turn... ahem... 40? Sorry, Mother Earth, you are millions of years older than that. Please understand and forgive.

Enjoy Earth Day every day!

Define Precious Cargo

So what defines a "precious cargo"? This weekend meant our neighbors transporting their newborn son home. Yesterday was our son driving his and Mamie's belongings from Dubuque to Duluth for their new start. Today was me and this birthday trifle.

I will say having this tasty bugger strapped in was a good idea since I had to slam my brakes for deer just 5 minutes into my commute! (Side note: It arrived in beautiful status and was 98% snarfed down before I took the bowl home today!)

But what about invisible precious cargo?

Think about who you are carrying around in your hearts – especially those with needs for additional prayers right now.

Like when our son called me tonight and said they quickly traveled from Duluth to southern Wisconsin because his girlfriend's best friend's dad died this morning from pancreatic cancer. His call was partly to share the sad news and also him saying how grateful he is he has both his amazing parents.

Yes, I'm ugly crying now!

I'll confess, when I was in my 20s, I can't imagine I'd ever have made that call to my parents. So who's more grateful now?

Just think about what precious things you are trying to keep safe. If you need extra prayers, ask for them! And if a friend or loved one needs prayers, share that.

There's a pretty good group of people around here who will pray and care about your precious cargo!

Sunday, SumDay and Mon(ey) Day!

Well as it turns out, I don't really have that much luck at BINGO per se, but for the second time in the past month I won the 50/50 raffle associated with it. Last month it was $300+ and Sunday (Sum-Day) it was $600+.

So yeah. $1,000-ish to me!

I guess you can take the girl out of Luck... but you can't take the Luck out of the girl!

Me... I'm that GIRL!

I obviously had a moment yesterday when I questioned why ESPN covered card games and corn hole... when BINGO would be so entertaining? I mean, I have a pretty mean "I just won $621" happy dance!

Also, I just have to caution the "young 'uns:" etc that they should never mocketh a "middle-aged" lady and her BINGO dobber. You could use a surprising $600+ right+?

Short answer: BINGO!

A Tale of Twisters and Monsters

What a strange two days! I took Friday afternoon off to head up to Hodag Country to meet my sister Nell. Not a local? Rhinelander is the home of the Hodag pictured above.

This mythical, mischievous creature was first “discovered” in Rhinelander in the late 19th century but may have been roaming the Northwoods for eons before that. I can't confirm or deny! Today, the Hodag has become the official symbol of Rhinelander – it’s even the mascot for the local high school and can be seen pretty much anywhere visitors go in Rhinelander.

That is not the reason we were going to Rhinelander. We swear. But it you can believe it, for me, meeting up with one on my sisters up there is twice as close (less than 2 hours) to driving 4 hours to see them in our Up North back home towns.

So when she said she was going to a conference Friday and Saturday and could use the company, I said sure!

In our routes up and over yesterday we were both more like the Storm Chased versus the Storm Chasers. We knew tornadoes and crazy stuff were predicted. In fact, on my route up I-39 they had already dismissed schools early for safety. We both had sunny skies and stayed ahead of it thankfully!

Me arriving to town: "Hey, sis, I found the Hodag!"

40 minutes later... clouds and high winds before we find a place to eat!

As we scarfed down our delicious Friday night burgers at a place called Bucketheads Sports Bar & Grill, we heard no less than three tornado warnings on the multiple TVs! We're like, should we take shelter? And... wait is that what county we're in?

Who knew being a tourist in Hodag Country could be so dangerous?

We did make it back to the hotel fine and she beat me in two games of Five Crowns before we realized the twisters did destructively touch down between Rhinelander and Wisconsin Rapids. Uff da.

And this morning we woke up to 30 degrees and a "real feel" of 21 degrees. So Wisconsin had sunny and golfing Thursday, twister Friday, and winter Saturday.

*Checks calendar*

Oh right, it's spring.

Got home about 6 p.m. tonight and am grateful for at least a little sister time. And super grateful for our safe travels.

Prayers to all dealing with tornado/wind damage and flooding right now. Consider any way we all can support them!

Oh and keep an eye out for those sneaky little monsters among us!
