Running to Stand Still

Lest you think I am stealing song titles again, running to stand still is not just a U2 song. Running to stand still is an expression that means you are fighting against a force that is pushing you backwards. You are having to exert yourself simply to stay in the position you started in.

In other words, for me, that is running...

Wednesday was Global Running Day. Yes, there is a day for everything. When I went to bed Tuesday night, I told hubby, "I'm setting the alarm early so I can get up and run." That in itself probably made him chuckle. I haven't been running regularly... or, well, at all lately. But I was determined to make a go of it on the worldwide holiday.

Fast forward a few hours and the nearly full moon is shining in the bedroom window and waking me. I get up to close the blinds and cannot fall asleep. I fall asleep but the darn birds wake me at 5. The alarm goes off at 6 a.m. and I don't just hit the snooze, I reset the alarm for a good half hour later.

I head to work at 7:15 a.m. and see Jim on my way. I get a text a few minutes later, "How was your run?" Oh ha. "Like a dream," I say.

So no running on Global Running Day.

This morning, though, despite the full moon again and sleepless hours again and the darn birds again, I got up and went for a run. Some walking, too. And I was actually running when Jim was returning home from a walk around the lake. Based on the time and my location, I am sure he quickly deduced that I hit the snooze quite a while. And that there was not enough time for me to go far.

Right on both counts. But 2+ miles is better than zero, right?

We'll see if I can get this routine going again. No, let me re-phrase that. You will see that I will get this routine going again. I actually enjoy running – and the results – but it is far better to keep going than start over. Ugh. Like I said, I have to exert myself simply to stay in the position I started in.

I can do this. People all over the world are doing it. They must be if it's an international holiday. Those are for serious stuff!

Don't forget today is still Name Your Poison Day, tomorrow is Donald Duck Day and Saturday is Ball Point Pen Day. Hopefully Hallmark is open 'til midnight.
