Almost a Happy Ending

Well I said yesterday I didn't think my day could get any better after our come-from-behind win in the first game and my lighthouse "trip." But I was wrong. There was definitely more highlights to come.

In our 6 o'clock game, we were pretty evenly matched with a team from Wauwatosa (Milwaukee suburb). Turns out the Coffey kid pitching for them is the son of Todd Coffey, who plays for the Brewers. So Carter got a hit off a Brewers' kid. Well not quite a "hit". He grounded out. But still he faced him and made contact!

The game went into extra innings and we were into our second extra inning when one of our guys got a big hit. Then the next guy followed suit, and so on and so on. Very contagious! You wouldn't believe it, but we got 8 runs that inning!! Our opponent had last ups and came nowhere close to catching us. So we won that and headed into today with a 2-0 record. That's definitely a first!

Our first game today was against an Antigo team that also was 2-0. Somehow our bats did not have time to cool, though, and we kicked their butts soundly. You may not believe this one either, but our boys won 17-5! Not kidding. I will post pictures of the scoreboard tomorrow!

So we won our pool but had to play the other 3-0 team for the championship. Got a brief break to eat (a little), drink and pee. Then it was onto the final game.

I guess we shouldn't have been surprised that this was a really good team. I mean we both got to be undefeated for the weekend for a reason. It was tied 4-4 for much of the game. Then that game went into extra innings, too. In the second extra inning (again), the Madison team scored one run. So we had last at-bats facing a 5-4 score. We just couldn't make the magic happen this time and we lost.

What a heartbreaker. The boys were really taking it hard -- even after getting a nice trophy. I hope now that they're all home and they've had time to cool off that they realize what an incredible tournament it was. I mean what an awesome way to wrap up our competitive season!

I almost wish we played a few more weekends! It was a great group of kids and they all improved immensely in the last 6 weeks. I look forward to giving it a go next year. And, even though he's a bit down right now, I know Carter will be up for it, too!

That's as close to a happy ending as we'll get so we'll take it!

Todd Coffey of the Brewers does have a son, but the child is only a little over a year old. Don't think he's pitching yet.

The one-year-old is the youngest of 3 kids.
