Friday Frenzy

There seemed to be way too many things on the "to do" list today -- but they were all good.

Hubby and I worked from home today since we had to get Carter into the doctor for his sports physicals. On Fridays when we get out early for summer hours (3 p.m.), it's not worth driving over and getting there at 10 a.m. instead of 7:30.

Carter's physical went well. He found out he officially is 5'4" ... now 2 inches taller than Mom, not just 1. Yikes. He weighs a lot less than me, too! So he was cleared for high school sports.

I wanted to keep him on track with his running, so I figured today I'd join him. Yes, the rumors are true. I am coming out of retirement. I even signed up to do 2 races with friends in the coming 2 months. I know, what I am thinking? I guess Carter inspired me to pick it back up after a 2-month hiatus. I figure if he can start from scratch, so can I.

What I learned, though, is that someone 30 years younger than me can get out of the starting gates a heckuva lot quicker than I can. We went running together, just 2 miles. We first walked 5 minutes to warm up and loosen up. Then we took off. I told him I was just going to jog at an easy pace since it had been so long since I ran. I half expected he'd stick by me and complain of various aches and pains, as he has done in the past. But no, he took off and I ate his dust. I wisely keep my slow and steady pace and did manage 2 miles -- and managed to lose sight of Carter ahead of me.

When I turned into the driveway, he hits the stopwatch on his iPod and informs me he finished and WAITED for me for 4 minutes and 13 seconds. Nice. I am glad he is that competitive! While admittedly, it is a bit humbling, it is honestly refreshing versus the aforementioned whining. So maybe this will be a good thing for both of us.

Later this afternoon, I took him to Shippy Shoes in Stevens Point and we got our new "proper" running shoes. We also met up with his friend Harry from Amherst, who is spending the night here. They hadn't seen each other all summer so they are having fun.

At least we assume so. Part of our Friday schedule also included going out to eat with friends at Anchor Bay Bar & Grill on the Wisconsin River. There were 11 of us in all. After a great meal, 4 of us headed over to Hotel Mead in Rapids to listen to "Tunes on the Terrace." Between friendly visit and nice weather, it was quite the pleasant evening.

The only thing left on my "to do" list is checking to see what I missed in the Olympics today. Then get to bed!

TGIF!

Rain Check

Carter will have to take a rain check on that week of hiking and camping in the Porkies. After all that severe weather up there yesterday, they actually ended up heading back to camp in Wisconsin. Just too much rain (unheard of, right?) for them to continue.

So he spent the night in a dry bed and got to do fun camp things today and will head home tomorrow as planned. I hope this doesn't dampen his enthusiasm (pun intended) for nature activities. I hope he enjoyed some of it anyway.

We got some of that wet stuff today, too. I had to take pictures because I forgot what it looked like!

It was coming down so hard and just smelled so good, I wanted it to last for hours and hours. Instead, it was over in less than 10 minutes. The sun came out, dried up the puddles and this afternoon you'd have no idea it had rained unless you saw it yourself.

We saw it because hubby and I took today and tomorrow off so we were home. We figured with Carter gone, we might do something fun. Just the two of us. Well golf would have been good, but that didn't happen. And the rain wasn't the reason we'll have to take a rain check on that.

Jim woke up with a really sore back -- probably from golfing with his dad and boy #1 yesterday, but it could just be age. Who knows? Anyway, he was stretching and resting it all day so we were not about to go make it worse. So I tried to get some stuff done. First order of business was an hour massage at 8:30. Basically rolled out of bed and went there -- not knowing that Jim's back was hurting worse than mine. I swear.

For fun after that, I cut his hair, did some organizing and put my Annika shrine together. My what?? See...
Got my autographed flag and photo plus the photo of us together in a large frame. Cool, eh? Now I just have to find a place to hang it!

For more fun, I sat on the deck and soaked up some rays while reading, then worked out and went to a picnic with some friends.

Tomorrow, I really better crack the whip (on myself!) and get some things done. Because once my baby comes home, I'll just want to hang out with him... while he ignores me and reacquaints himself with his iPod Touch and the TV. Sigh... I still missed him!

As Luck Would Have It...

My luck has been running in strange streaks lately...

You just never know if the rules of 3 will apply.

When our sump pump was malfunctioning last month, there was at least 3 carpet-soaking floods in our basement. We finally do have a new pump, but I've had to throw out a ton of stuff stored in cardboard boxes versus sturdy plastic totes. Sigh...

Yesterday, when I was walking to Carter's game, my MP3 player froze up. I thought, what else it gonna break? It was weird. It had been fully charged and just quit playing in the middle of song. The power was still on but I couldn't shut it off and even when I plugged it back into the charger when we got home, it did nothing. It was frozen "on" for some reason.

I sort of didn't mind. I've had it for something like 8 years and it has served me well. However, I am starting to get jealous of Carter's new, very cool iPod Touch. So if I was forced to replace my player, I would just have to get one of those!

Well darned if it didn't start working again just fine tonight. See, when I wouldn't mind the bad luck, I don't get it. I guess I should be grateful.

I did have some strange luck today, though.

As incentive to work the car show, our company prez said for each shift we worked, we'd get our name in a drawing for some Packer items, including game tickets. Then, the more you worked, the more name tickets you'd get per shift. I signed up for my normal 5 shifts because I am on the "old cars" staff. It certainly had nothing to do with any Packer prizes. But I got my name in the bucket some 40 times, I think. But other people had theirs in a lot, too.

Today was the day there were serving ice cream to the workers then drawing for prizes. I told my boss I wouldn't be there since we had to get Carter to an appointment in Rapids, "but text me if I win something big," I said. He countered, "You wouldn't want to win Packer tickets anyway, would you?" I said, sure, it would make me the sister of the year or daughter of the year or something of the year!

So guess which Viking fan wins Packer tickets? This one!

Actually the 3 people drawn before me got first dibs on the regular season game tickets. I get pre-season ones. So of course I call my sister Renell in central Minnesota, who could wear green and gold every day of the year and probably not wear anything twice. Since she's never been to Lambeau Field for a game, I figured I better ask her first. (No, Jim and Carter were not interested.) Of course, Renell was ecstatic! Who cares if it's just pre-season?!

I found out later this evening that I actually won 4 tickets, not just 2, so now I'll have to do some thinking. I might have to have a "lottery" with the rest of my siblings who aren't smart enough to boast Purple Pride. We'll have to see. I'd be open to bribes until I figure it out. Ha.

We'll see who else's luck is about to change.

Scenic Route

In just two weeks, Carter is heading on a backpacking excursion with the high school group from church. Can't get used to him being a "high schooler." In preparation, we've purchased various items we didn't have "on hand" since we are not outdoorsy camping types.

In the past 6 weeks, we've gotten hiking shoes, a special mummy-style sleeping bag and pad, appropriate socks, soap and XL Ziploc bags for storing clothes. His one task, besides having his mother buy all this, was to break in those hiking shoes. Nobody wants blisters the first day of camp!

A few weeks ago, he ventured out on a 2-mile walk with me to start the breaking-in process. He hasn't put them on since. Initially, our pastor said they should put 20 miles on those shoes before the trip to the Porcupine Mountains. Today after church, he told Carter 50! Uhm, yeah, he's gonna have to get 48 miles in over 14 days. Not gonna happen. But we will get those 20 in at least, even if I have to walk every step with him. Which I plan to!

Plus, I have to be the drill sergeant or he won't do this on his own.

So after church, we changed clothes and went for a 3-mile hike. A flat one with no backpack on. (But that will change very soon!) By the end he was already complaining of sore knees and thighs. He is Mr. Out of Shape! We had an interesting hike, though.

Right out of the gate we see an albino squirrel cross the road in front of us. Of course we both got excited. I said, "Get your new  iPod out and take a picture!"

His new iPod Touch sure does a lot of cool things. But he's going to have to figure out how to take clear photos! You get the idea, though. We're pretty sure "Albi" is a neighborhood resident so we may see him again. If this is what entices Carter to get out there and keep walking/hiking, then I'll take it.

Lord knows the scenery he'll see in the Porkies will surpass this ten-fold! I might just have to send my camera with him!

In a super sealed Ziploc bag, of course!

W is for Win

Some things are worth waiting for. Carter's team has had only one victory in 3 baseball tournaments. Today, after our second loss in our fourth tourney, we turned things around.

First game was at 10 a.m. against New Richmond. Despite one of our guys hitting a home run out of the park and Carter having an awesome hit to right field, we still lost 9-2. Bummer!

During our "intermission" -- the 3 hours til we had to be back for our next game -- we stopped at Target so Carter could buy his new iPod Touch. Yes, he is a good saver so this is quite the upgrade from the "regular" iPod he put through the washer and dryer.

After that, we went to see Jim's aunt and uncle who live in Marshfield. Had a nice visit with them, then headed back to the ballpark at 3. Since our game wasn't until 4, I had a chance to take a walk and get some steps. I was smart today and brought my tennies so I wouldn't have to hoof it that far in flip-flops!

For both games we had light rain showers. During the second one, it was just an annoying enough drizzle we had to use umbrellas. It did not interfere with the game against Sussex. We were tied 1-1 then 2-2 and so on until they jumped ahead 8-6. We somehow rallied like yesterday and pulled ahead -- this time keeping our lead and winning 11-8. How awesome is that?! Finally, a W!

So now we return in the morning and play for 5th place overall. Oh well, it's better than being done and out.

When we got home, we dropped Carter off and Jim and I went out on a date. Whoo-hoo! We went to Anchor Bay, a bar/restaurant on the Wisconsin River, where the two-person band KatmanDeux was playing. The woman -- Kat or Kathy -- is a high school classmate of Jim's. They were in Swing Choir together actually. She was awesome! She could belt out any strong lead female vocal you can think of -- from Emmylou Harris and Martina McBride to Pat Benatar and Adele. Excellent! Her partner sang, too, but was most impressive playing the drums, bass or banjo, and the harmonica... all at the same time! Quite a talent.

It was a nice date and it was fun meeting her. Now it's off to bed to sleep quick (again) and hope for more good things to come tomorrow.

Daily Commute

Today was Carter's first day commuting with us to Iola. This week he is doing the Adventures in Leadership program. Next week he'll start his job duties.

It was a long ride without his iPod. He survived.

We had to pick him up by 2:45 to get back into Rapids for a 4 p.m. appointment. Knowing we were on a tight schedule, he still asked if we could stop at King Cone. Unfortunately, I had to say "no." Right now, between our two detours en route to work, we don't even go by King Cone anymore. It is actually out of the way. But there have been times we have still been able to find it. We are nothing if we are not diligent!

One of these days, when we aren't pressed for time, we'll stop in. Hopefully the road construction ends soon so King Cone returns to our route. I'm fully aware Wisconsin only has two seasons -- winter and road construction -- but it doesn't mean I have to like it.

I imagine Carter and I will make up for lost time later.

Hey, we have to have some perks to our jobs!

A Penny Saved...

There's something to be said for details. After seeking out all that advice on how to save a wet iPod, I find out now it's all for naught.

When did Carter discover his iPod had gone through the wash? Uhm, that would be when he was folding his clothes.... AFTER they had gone through the washer AND the dryer. Just a little detail that would have been nice to know.

Of course, that means his iPod is basically fried. Little chance of survival. But we'll keep it in the bag of rice for a week, just in case.

Now it pretty goes without saying that his Cans For Carter Fund is going to be earmarked for something different. You might recall it initially was for a go-kart, then he thought maybe a car... now it's an iPod Touch, which is an expensive upgrade from his regular iPod.

He's actually closer to saving $200 than I am, that's sad to say. Of course, he just had a birthday and graduation so he's got some pennies saved.

In fact, he counted out his paper money and big coins and realized he has a lot of pennies. A lot. So yesterday he started sorting them by year -- to see if he had one from each year, etc. Today, since he had it "off," he slept in until 11 then got back on the "project" this afternoon. Now that he has them all stacked he doesn't know what he's going to do with them. Put them in special containers, a book, what?

I've got an idea. How about helping us buy a new sump pump?

Oh yes, today helpful Carter did some laundry again and flooded the basement again. If he thinks this is going to give him a free pass from laundry, he's got another thing coming.

No free passes.

Better keep saving those pennies.
