Alaska Day 3 :: Hide and Seek

Had a very comfortable first night's sleep in Ed. The queen mattress is a real one, not an air mattress. We had sleep masks on so the light didn't wake us.

But the light pitter-patter of rain drops on the roof did. Today was our 8-hour bus tour into Denali Park so we wanted some decent weather. Donned our rain gear and headed out in this bus that...

Looks like the start of a movie. And I'm not sure if it's a good one or tragedy. But our trusty bus driver Scotty kept us on the road and safe despite some pretty scary hairpin turns! His grandparents are from Wisconsin Rapids so that was a small world. (Yes, the Hedberg girls are known to start up conversations with strangers.)

Scott was a wealth of information about the park, the wildlife, and the unfortunate reality that Denali only shows herself about 20 percent of the time and a rainy cloudy morning didn't bode well.

How the largest mountain in North America can hide herself is beyond me, but she did. And we just kept seeking her at every turn.

On the plus side, the light rain was done after a few hours and sunlight returned for the whole trip back from the turn around point. Another plus is we saw wildlife...

Including these two unique species of caribou plus 13 real ones...

We also saw 14 Dall Sheep, which were too far to capture clearly, and 1 moose who similarly was pretty far away. Maybe pictures turned out. I'll admit I didn't take time to go through the hundreds from our tour.

But here is just a snapshot of some of the beauty...

It was about 4 p.m. when we returned...

Said goodbye to the park and headed south to Talkeetna,  all the while seeking the elusive Denali.

Then we get to the tiny hippy village, and we struck gold. Not Alaskan gold rush gold, but something to make us treasure our vacation even more.

We finally saw HER.

She's huge. Majestic. How could she hide from us all day?

I mean really, how could we miss her?!

So grateful the little burb of Talkeetna offered up the best view. Oh and ice cream. Definitely found that treasure, too. Feeling so blessed.

Can't wait see what comes yet after a good night's sleep! Sun sets at 11:58 p.m. tonight. So I guess we're going to be going to sleep "early" by Alaskan standards.

We don't mind.
