Getting Schooled

Experience has taught us that any time we actually take a vacation day and plan a golf outing, there's a good chance it's going to rain. So we weren't completely surprised we heard storm sirens going off at 8:15 a.m. today. We just hoped for the best.

Since our tee time was set down at University Ridge near Madison, we figured there was a slim chance it might not be raining down there. Or at least not so hard the sirens would be sounded. So we hit the road as planned by 9:30 so we could meet our friends Scott and Sandy at 11:30.

The ride down didn't look good. Saw lots of downed trees and branches and traveled through plenty of downpours.
We even saw this semi on its side along the interstate, but didn't know if that was caused by the high winds or the rain or something else.

We were quite relieved to be greeted with dry weather when we got to the golf course. It sprinkled just a bit when we were getting ready to start, but that was it. Whew!

Since this is the University of Wisconsin course, there was a lot of Badger branding everywhere. Sandy went to school there so she absolutely loved it!

They even had a Bucky bench! Something every Badger fan should have in their yard!

The course itself was beautiful. And deceptive. We were schooled big time. It didn't look that tough, but it brought us all to our knees. Quite challenging! I think Jim knocked his drive in the water here.

But at least he stayed out of the sand. I was not so lucky! Most holes had a plethora of sand traps like you see here... and you couldn't pay me to stay away. So yes, it was hot and muggy and I got a bit crabby and was cursing like a sailor at times.

The important thing is we had a fun time with friends -- and it was a day off!

Carter had football practice after school and Grandpa Austin picked him up so we didn't have to rush back either. We ate dinner in a place called Cahoots. Yup, we were "in Cahoots," so to speak.

Got back into town and headed straight for the football field where Assumption High School was taking on the Chippewa Falls team. Jim's dad was there with Carter so we took him home after an Assumption victory!

Pretty darn good day despite that questionable start. Never should have doubted it!
