Racing Through the Day

The day went so fast you'd think I was the one qualifying for a race. But no, sometimes having no plans means catching up lots of little things and time flies.

Managed to sleep in, go to the bank, get a run/sprint/walk in, shovel rocks in my rock garden and read 200-some pages in my monthly Book Club book. All before leaving the house at 4:45 p.m. for the races.

Jim and I rode up to Marshfield with his parents. Got there in time to see qualifying. Our nephew didn't qualify with fast time but made up for it later.

First they had the Dash for Cash, which includes the 4 fastest super late models that are "track regulars." In other words, faster cars that came for the Yellow River Racing Series race tonight but haven't raced in Marshfield before tonight, didn't qualify. So it was Colin and 3 others and Colin won it easily!

How exciting to see him in the Winner's Circle! I did take some pictures with my "good" camera but since it is so late, I will upload those tomorrow and share. The Dash and the heat race were the only ones I could take pictures of anyway since it got dark for the main feature and neither my good camera or my phone camera respond well to that. Back to racing...

The heat race was an exciting one. Colin lead, then was neck and neck with this car. Ultimately, it was a photo finish!

Colin just edged him out for the win! Whoo-hoo! Two for two! Crazy.

The feature was 50 laps and we had our fingers crossed for a trifecta. For the first 15 laps, Colin was basically running 3rd, trying to get around the number 1 and 2 cars, which were so busy jockeying for the front position that they were effectively blocking Colin out. With 33 laps to go, he managed to pass them both and hold the lead for a good 10 laps before he got tapped by the car close behind him. That driver told officials it was his fault, not Colin's. So Colin stayed in first for the re-start.

Not sure if their collision knocked something out of place or what, but with 15 laps to go, Colin slipped to 2nd, then 3rd. It looked like he would end up in 3rd but with less than a lap to go, something happened to the car and Colin basically cruised on low or no power to the finish line, ending up in 10th or 12th. I'm not even sure.

What a crushing end to such a promising night!

That's racing, though, isn't it? That's most sports actually. No lead is safe until the competition concludes. It ain't over 'til it's over, right fat lady with the musical voice?

We had a good time. And it was nice to end the day with family. Hoping tomorrow will be even more low-key and we won't be racing around for anything. Gotta slow things down before the checkered flag signals the weekend finish line!
