Boys of Fall

The Royals road to state began in Edgar today, where our cross country team had its sectional final and our football team had its first-round playoff game.

Hubby and I shortened our work day and hit the road Up North by 2:30 p.m. Our Division 3 Sectional at 9-Mile Forest Recreation Area featured runners from 18 schools. The top 2 finishing teams advance to state next week, along with the top 5 individual runners from schools that did have teams advance.

Our boys were pretty primed and ready to go. No fear. Just lots of confidence.

Fortunately, when they crossed the finish line, they could back it up!

How did we do? Well, excitingly enough, one of our seniors finished first overall, so that was incredible to see! When 5 of our runners finished in the top 21, we were pretty sure we had a "three-peat" on our hands. Just didn't know how much we dominated and who was going to state with us.

Turns out we really dominated! Finishing 46 points ahead of the second-place team from Stratford. Wow! Back to state as team for the 3rd year in a row!

Proud of these guys. Three in the back row are seniors and all 4 ran last year with Carter. Thrilled for them that they have this honor again. It was a gorgeous day for a run and we were blessed to see them do well.

From there, we boogied up to Edgar High School (about 15 minutes away) for the football game. Added some layers of clothes, a scarf and hat, and activated the hand warmers. It was in the high 30s and it was time for hot chocolate!

This was the first round of high school football playoffs and Edgar has quite the team. I think they had 50 guys suited up compared to our 30 maybe. And they were good. Pretty sure this was our toughest game this year. We stuck with them for most of the first half. Then they had a field day with us in the second half, eventually beating us 34-7. Ouch.

I feel bad for the seniors who are done playing now. For good. Was proud of our friends' son Zack who reached the 1,000 yards for the season milestone tonight. What a way to finish on top!

Ideally, it would have been great to have a win-win today. Just glad there were loyal Royal fans to cheer on the "boys of fall" at both events.

They deserve it. That and a cup of hot chocolate.
