Scattered Showers

I was a total weather geek today. I was obsessed with watching the radar on my computer screen... silently urging the green and yellow and orange masses to make their way quickly across Wisconsin.

Somehow it worked.

There was plenty of rain -- enough to cancel stock car races for the night -- but it stopped in time for our ball tournament to start this afternoon. I worked concessions basically from 4-6 p.m. to help get things set up and going. Then I ran some errands and got back to the fields for Carter's 7:30 game. His first tournament game!

We felt a few drops when it first started but that was it. The threatening rain clouds graciously skirted around the fields so we could play the whole game without any inconvenience (or discomfort) to the fans.

I tell ya, the tournament games are much more intense than our regular league games. But I like it! I also like knowing some of the kids on the team and their parents and being able to cheer for them since we're all from Rapids -- instead of cheering against them when they are on different league teams. That part is fun.

It's also fun winning.

We got off to a quick 5-0 lead but the other team (from Plover) wasted no time returning the favor and before we knew it, it was tied. Thankfully, we got some great hits in during the last inning and we won, yes won, 10-5. Whoo-hoo!

Carter grounded out and then struck out after a failed bunt attempt. But hey, he was hanging in there. I think he'll be OK this weekend. Tomorrow we have games at 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. so we're going to get some good sleep.

Carter's taking a shower to clean off and, as he put it, "Wash away all thoughts of today and concentrate on tomorrow."

Good strategy. Now let's hope the chance of scattered showers means the clouds will scatter again, too. Scatter away.
