Silver Belles

Our Assumption girls basketball team's back-to-back bid for a state championship came full circle today. But not in a good way.

Last year we beat the team from Barneveld by 4 points to claim the Division 5 title.

This year, unfortunately, they beat us by that same slim margin. Dang. It was close the whole game. We had a 2- to 4-point lead most of the time but they tied it in the fourth quarter and our girls just couldn't capture the lead again.

They played their hearts out and were extremely disappointed to be the silver belles of the ball, rather than the golden ones again.

We were all very proud of them, though! When their bus arrived back in Rapids, it was escorted through town by the fire department, ending at the high school, where we had a welcome-back pep rally of sorts. I'm pretty sure Carter has never played his baritone this many hours in one week before! Wow, busy for everyone.

After that event, most of us headed over to The Ridges for food, refreshments and reruns. Well, they did re-watch the game and then it was all about NCAA basketball. Since I got up early to get Carter to school for the band bus at 7:30 a.m., I bailed and came home.

Needed cough syrup and, frankly, just needed to be home. Between Vegas and two days in Green Bay, I really, really just want to be home.

But, like we tell our state runner-up hoops team, there is always tomorrow...
