Carter has accumulated some birthday money, which apparently is already burning a hole in his pocket.
We've been having trouble with one of our garage doors opening and closing consistently. On Sunday night we discovered the culprit. One of the sensors -- which happens to be located right where Carter parks his bike -- had been knocked down. On Sunday, he said he was pretty sure he didn't knock it down. But yesterday at some point, he relented and said he "probably" was the one who broke it.
When Daddy informed him it costs a hundred bucks to have someone come fix it (yes, they charge a lot for labor), Carter said, "I'll help pay for it. If it costs $100, I can pay $92. Then you only have to pay $8."
Wow, that's a lot of money. He explained: "Well I have $75 in birthday money and $17 in quarters." (Maybe that Tooth Fairy has been overpaying him after all.)
Of course, we're not going to make him use his birthday money for this. But it is refreshing to have him take ownership and show the willingness to correct it. ... And astonishing, too, that we are already entering into the stage of our lives where our kids have more money than us!
Tell me again why we're both here at work before the crack of dawn...
